Duval County Sheriff moves to Nassau County: Is he breaking the law?

A recent article at Eye on Jacksonville brings into question the recent move of Duval County Sheriff Mike Williams to Nassau County.

Sheriff Williams is terming out and there are currently many candidates in the race for this prestigious spot. As Sheriff Williams plans his retirement, he looked to the beautiful and serene county nearby and decided to purchase is retirement home here.

So what’s the story you might ask?

Eye on Jacksonville goes into detail about the question if he is breaking the law. Sheriff Williams believes he is on legal ground to move due to State Law stating you don’t need to live where you “sheriff.” However, the city of Jacksonville has its own charter and it states you must live in Duval County.

The legal battle begins to see who wins – the state or the city.

Nonetheless – if Sheriff Williams did indeed break the law, it appears not much will happen to him. He may be asked to resign and that doesn’t mean he will lose his pension. That only means he will retire to beautiful Nassau County a little earlier than expected.
