At this week’s Fernandina Beach City Commission meeting, the approval of a proclamation recognizing Transgender Day of Remembrance ignited intense debate, echoing broader national conversations about gender identity and its implications for women and children. Residents voiced strong opposition, aligning with a growing grassroots movement to “Make America Normal Again,” which seeks to address the erosion of traditional values.
A Stand for Women and Children
Several residents stepped forward to voice their concerns about the implications of celebrating transgender identity in a city proclamation, arguing that such measures promote an agenda that undermines the rights and dignity of women and endangers children.
Janice Knocke dismissed the proclamation because:
“This proclamation is nothing more than activism. It pushes a false narrative that transgender individuals are being systematically targeted for violence when the facts simply don’t support that claim. What we are really seeing is a broader political push to normalize men invading women’s spaces and sports under the guise of inclusion. This is not progress—it’s an insult to women.”
Knocke went on to criticize the commission for spending time on divisive social issues instead of focusing on the needs of the local community.
Protecting Children from Confusion
Kelly Yates, another concerned resident, pointed to the harm she believes such public proclamations and events can have on children, especially when it comes to gender identity discussions.
“Four years ago, this community allowed an LGBTQ event in a children’s park that featured drag queens and adults dressed in BDSM gear. That’s not just inappropriate—it’s grooming,” Yates said. “We have a responsibility to protect our kids from these harmful ideologies, which are confusing them and leading to irreversible decisions like surgeries and hormone treatments. This is child abuse masquerading as progress.”
Yates called for a local ban on drag queens performing or appearing in children’s spaces. Ms. Yates has activated that concern by developing a petition to ban BDSM Transsexuals and Drag Queens from Children’s parks. You can sign the petition here.
Do not California the Island
Alan Hopkins, a resident of Fernandina Beach, began his comments by affirming his belief in equal protections for all Americans but warned of the cultural impact such proclamations can have.
“What I do care about is the moral fabric of our community,” Hopkins said. “When we refuse to protect children and instead push these kinds of proclamations, we are being false to ourselves and the values that make Fernandina Beach special.”
Having relocated from California to escape the “woke policies” eroding community values, Hopkins urged the commission not to allow Fernandina Beach to follow the same path.
“Please, do not turn this city into what I escaped from when I left California. God bless you, and God bless our community,” he concluded.
First Amendment Pushback from Leadership
Vice Mayor Ayscue, who voted against the proclamation, addressed his reasoning succinctly, saying,
“I believe this proclamation is part of a broader political agenda, and I will not support it.”
Ayscue’s opposition reflects growing conservative resistance to what many view as overreach by local governments in endorsing social causes that clash with traditional values.
A Broader Movement
The sentiments expressed in Fernandina Beach align with a larger national effort to push back against extreme gender ideology. Congress itself is embroiled in similar debates, as concerns over transgender access to women’s restrooms in the Capitol has sparked outrage among lawmakers. The parallels between local and federal discussions show how deeply this issue resonates with Americans across the country.

The grassroots “Make America Normal Again” movement is gaining traction, emphasizing the importance of common sense, traditional values, and a return to biological reality.
As Fernandina Beach residents take a stand against what they see as a divisive agenda, they are joining a national chorus calling for a return to sanity. Protecting women’s spaces, safeguarding children, and rejecting radical ideologies are becoming rallying cries for those who feel their voices have been drowned out by political correctness.
