The TPC is Coming to Town

The Tournament Players Championship (TPC) is on the horizon and will be played March 7-12, 2023. We appreciate this event for a lot of reasons and thought a little history and Tournament Tidbits would be welcomed by our readers.

The tournament was established in 1974 by the then-Commissioner of the PGA Tour, Deane Beman.

Beman wanted to create a championship that would showcase the tour’s best players on a challenging course, and he believed that a course designed specifically for the tournament would provide the perfect platform. He worked with renowned golf course architect Pete Dye to design the TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, which would serve as the tournament’s permanent home.

The TPC at Sawgrass is known for its iconic 17th hole, a par-3 island green that has become one of the most famous holes in golf. The hole has been the site of many dramatic moments over the years, including a hole-in-one by Fred Couples in 1997 and a quadruple-bogey by Bob Tway in 2005.

Over the years, the tournament has been won by some of the biggest names in golf, including Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Greg Norman, and Vijay Singh. The purse for the tournament has also grown significantly since its inception, with the winner now receiving over $2 million in prize money.

Today, The Players Championship is considered one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf, and it continues to draw the world’s best players to compete on one of the sport’s most iconic courses.

There are several unique facts about The Players Championship (TPC), also known as the TPC Golf Tournament, that make it a special event in the world of golf. Here are a few examples:

It is estimated that the TPC has over 2,000 volunteers helping out in various capacities, including marshaling, scoring, transportation, and hospitality. It’s also worth noting that this number may not include all of the volunteers involved in the TPC, as other organizations and groups may also provide volunteers to help with the event.
